IPR Scientific Outreach Programme on Plasma, Its Applications and Nuclear Fusion (PLASMA GYAAN-2022)

 

The IPR Outreach Programme on Plasma, Its Applications and Nuclear Fusion, “PLASMA GYAAN - 2022” that was organized at Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, Off-Campus Jaipur, during 22-26 August 2022. This outreach programme was jointly organized by Department of Physics, BIT Mesra, Off-Campus Jaipur and Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

 

The IPR outreach programme is an initiative from Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, Gujarat, which is a premier research institute of Plasma Physics under Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. This event is organized under the aegis of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” to spread the awareness and knowledge about Plasma Science & Technology and its applications, to various parts of India among school/college students, research scholars, science teachers and general public etc. A team of expert scientists from Outreach Division of IPR, Gandhinagar headed by Senior Plasma Scientist, Dr. A. V. Ravi Kumar, work consistently to conduct multiple training sessions that combine introductory lectures and various hands-on experiments / live scientific models on Plasma Science & Technology.

 

This scientific outreach programme, Plasma Gyaan-2022 was started on 22nd August 2022 with the inaugural function at BIT Mesra, Off-Campus Jaipur. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Mrs. Mugdha Sinha, IAS, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of Rajasthan with ribbon cutting ceremony.

The exhibition of Scientific Plasma Models is the main point of attraction of the programme. The exhibition is composed of experiments like, Glow discharge plasma, Jacob’s ladder, Plasma Globe, Plasma ion thruster, Plasma pyrolysis, Plasma torch for medical applications, Plasma nitriding, Plasma torch for textiles, Superconductivity-Magnetic levitation, Tesla coil discharge, Plasma lightening, Terella and Plasma jets etc. A beautiful model of Nuclear Fusion Reactor-Tokamak was also exhibited which attracted mostly all the visitors. These plasma models and table-top experiments were explained by the engineering students of BIT Mesra, Off-Campus Jaipur and science students of Jayshree Periwal Global School, Jagatpura, Jaipur. The students from the schools and colleges enjoyed these plasma experiment and beautiful glow and illumination of gas discharges. Several experiments were based on societal and industrial applications of plasma technology.

 

In a span of 5-days programme, science students from different schools of Jaipur visited to BIT Campus. Main visiting schools are St. Anselms Pink City School, Jayshree Periwal Global School, Rukmani Birla Modern High School, BVB Vidya Ashram School - JLN Marg, BVB Vidya Ashram School - Pratap Nagar, Golden Era Academy, SRN International School, Tuito International School, Malviya Convent School, Rawat Public School, Defence Public School, Gyan Vihar School and My Own School. A total of more than 1000 students visited the BIT Campus and participated in the outreach programme.

 

Apart from Schools, the students from MNIT Jaipur, BIT Mesra, Off-Campus Jaipur, SKIT College, JECRC University, Rajasthan University, Kanoria Mahila Mahavidhalaya, Shyam Lal college of University of Delhi etc. participated in the programme with great zeal.

 

A teacher training session on Plasma technology was also conducted on last day of the programme. About 25 teachers from different schools and colleges attended the training session and got benefitted. IPR Gandhinagar distributed books and resource materials and activity kits on Plasma Science to all the participating teachers.

 

An animation design exhibition was also presented by Department of Animation & Multimedia, BIT Mesra, Off-campus Jaipur. Beautiful paintings, sculptures, sketches, cartoons, animated movies were shown in this exhibition that were created by students and faculties of the animation department. All the Plasma Gyaan participants visited to this exhibition also and enjoyed a lot.

 

Sri Ashutosh Vajpei, Joint Secretary, Economic Affairs Department, Govt. of Rajasthan has consented to be the 'Chief Guest' in the Closing Ceremony. 

 

All the participants from schools, colleges and teachers received the participation certificates.
