  1. Admission to BHM program 2025 - an Introduction

 

The Bachelor of Hotel Management(BHM) program at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi is of 4 years duration.

 

The Department of Management at BIT Mesra has been offering hotel management education since 2003, recognizing the multifaceted scope of the hospitality industry encompassing culinary arts, guest services, accommodation operations, and value-driven service excellence. With a dynamic blend of faculty from both academia and the hospitality sector, the Department has continually evolved to meet industry needs. Starting from 2025, the Department is launching a newly curated 4-Year Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) program, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This program provides multiple entry and exit options, enabling flexible learning pathways for students. Replacing the earlier Bachelor of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (BHMCT) program, this new structure offers a more comprehensive and future-ready curriculum, grounded in a Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and designed to impart core operational expertise alongside managerial competencies through an innovative pedagogical approach.

 

 

The foremost objective of the Department is to produce the most competent hospitality professionals to fill various positions in the emerging hospitality sectors. The emphasis is laid on practical application of theoretical lessons in all four core areas through training, laboratory work, hands-on workshops, theme parties, projects and study tours. Students are encouraged to learn and undertake research activities during their course. All students go on “Industrial Exposure Training” for 18 weeks in various Star Hotels as a part of their curriculum. Apart from Industrial Training, students also go for vocational training in between their semester break.

 

The Department has various well-equipped laboratories such as Food Production, Finishing kitchen, Training Bakery, Food and Beverage Service, Training Bar, Accommodation Operation & Front Office. The Departmental and Central library provide access to a wide range of hospitality and tourism related books, magazines and research journals including on- line journals to students and faculty members.

 

 

The Department has a biannual blind refereed national research journal, both printed and online - “JOHAR- a Journal of Hospitality Application and Research”, the first of its kind in India. It is being published by Publishing India Group, India.

 

The Department regularly organizes workshops, theme parties and events, for the overall development of students and to provide real life experiences in the field of event management. Lectures by professionals from hotel industry are also regularly organized for the benefit of students.

 

 

Integrated Guest House

The department has a 34-room guesthouse dedicated to providing hands-on training for students. Each room is fully equipped with modern amenities, including a television, mini-fridge, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi access. Additionally, guests have convenient access to an adjoining restaurant.

Placement Record

Bachelor of Hotel Management is a new program; the first batch will commence from 2025. The program is specifically curated in line with the requirement of NEP-2020 and offer exit option at various stage for flexible learning. The department was offering Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) program since 2003 and had excellent placement record.

  • BHMCT graduates are placed in reputed Hotels, Fine Dining Restaurant Chains, Travel & Tour Management Companies, Airlines, International Cruise Liners and Retail sectors.
  • Our pass-out students are working in world-class companies like – ITC Hotels, Reliance Retail Limited, Domino’s Pizza, Taj Hotels, Tata GIC Ltd., Crown Plaza - A unit of IHG, Marriot India- The Westin, Make My Trip India Pvt Ltd., Swiggy, Justa Hotels Pvt. Ltd., West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Ltd., HexaHealth, Bhanzu, Great Learning, Miki Wire Works Pvt. Ltd., etc.
  • A few of our students are also rendering their service in overseas hotels and airlines like Dland Boslerhof, Germany; Jackson Ville Marriott, Florida, USA; Samin Hotel Hilton, Virginia Beach, USA; Qatar Airways etc.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have passed Class 12 / Intermediate or equivalent qualifying examination with 50% (45% for SC/ST) marks in Class 12 / Intermediate or equivalent qualifying examination with English as a subject.

Appearing candidates may also apply. The candidates will be informed to submit the marksheet of Class 12 in BIT ERP portal after declaration of result. 

Notes:

  • Candidates with foreign diplomas should see the EdCIL website for equivalence (http://www.edcil.co.in), and if required should obtain an equivalence certificate from the evaluation division of the AIU (website http://www.aiuweb.org).
  • In case any Board awards grades instead of marks, the calculation of equivalent marks would be based on the procedure prescribed by the Board.
  • At the time of reporting for admission & document verification, selected candidates will be required to produce originals of Pass Certificate of Class 10, Marksheets of Class 10 and Class 12 showing requisite minimum marks, as well as Caste or Special Category certificates in proper format signed by appropriate authority (please see instructions).
  • At any level of the studies [Class X or Class XII], a candidate / applicant must have passed all the required subjects at that level from the same Board.

How to Apply

  1. To fill online application form, click on the link APPLY ONLINEto register for the program and create password for the application process. Do not share the password with anybody. 
  2. Eligible candidates must complete and submit the application form online only 
  3. Pay application fee of Rs.1,500/- (General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates) and Rs.1,000/- (SC/ST candidates) through ICICI payment Gateway (candidates may use net banking / debit card/ credit card of any nationalized bank) till the last date of application process. Fee once remitted shall not be refunded.
  4. Candidates should proceed to fill the Online Application Form only after they satisfy themselves that they fulfill all the eligibility criteria.

Form / Application Numbers:

The Form / Application numbers on each online application form may be noted and cited in correspondence, if required.

Selection Procedure:

The selection will be based on marks obtained by the candidates in Class 12 / Intermediate / equivalent qualifying examination. However, candidates must meet the age criteria and other minimum academic requirements (see Eligibility Criteria).

 Direct Admission: Students having 75% marks or above in their qualifying examination shall be considered for Direct Admission.

The shortlisted candidates will be called for documents verification cum admission based on their merit and data submitted by the candidates on their application forms. The same will be intimated on the Institute website only as web notifications.

Cancellation of Admission Offer:  The admission of a candidate will be automatically cancelled.

  1. if any information provided in the application form is found incorrect or missing.
  2. those who fail to produce the marksheet of Class XII or equivalent qualifying examination in time as stipulated.

 

Reservation Norms:

  1. For all programs at the Institute which are supported by any of the respective State Governments, the reservation criteria for the state quota are as per the norms of the respective State Government.
  2. For all other programs the reservation criteria for SC & ST are as per the statutory norms of Central Govt. (SC -15% & ST - 7.5%)
  3. The Institute observes statutory reservation for Persons with Disability (5%).
  4. Upto 10% seats (over and above of sanction intake) are reserved for candidates belonging to Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
  5. 50% of the total seats are reserved for candidates who have passed their qualifying examination (Class 12) from Jharkhand State. (The “State of Eligibility” of a candidate for the purpose will be determined based on location of his/her School / College where s/he has passed the qualifying examination.

[In case sufficient numbers of suitable candidates from any group are not available, the Institute reserves the right to fill the seats from the other group].

However, the final reservation proportion will depend on notification, if any, issued by competent authority and as accepted by the Institute.

Notes:

  1. The Institute reserves the right to lower the intake in a program without showing any reason.
  2. The Institute also reserves the right not to offer a program in case the number of students found to be eligible / admitted is less than 50% in number.

  • Our students are successfully running start-ups like Prapti Hospitality, Rasa Bakes, Aditi Sweets, Ved-a-Café, The Wave Restaurant, etc.

  • In Food Production Lab 1 students learn to prepare all hot section dishes from Indian and international cuisines including both vegetarian and non-vegetarian stocks, sauces, soups, salads, main course items. They also work on Tandoori and Halwai section as well as Cold buffet. This Kitchen takes the major load of Food Production during theme parties, Food fest and visits of dignitaries at Institute level.
  • In Food Production Lab 2 all bakery and patisserie items are prepared and demonstrated to the students. This includes making of breads, cookies and biscuits, cakes and pastries, tarts and pies and frozen desserts etc.
  • Our bar- The Cask is used for demonstration purpose in making students aware of service of all sorts of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, cocktail and mocktail preparation etc.
  • Accommodation Operation Laundry Lab facilitates our students in learning the process of linen and laundry management which includes sorting, stain removal, washing, drying and ironing of linens and uniforms with the help of various cleaning agents and Domestic and industrial equipment. This lab also facilitates students to learn the intricacies of flower arrangements.
  • Our Restaurant Prayas ensures that student learn various skill of service and get insight into various types of service like American, English, buffet, Gueridon, Russian etc.
  • Front Office Lab helps student to understand the various process of Reservation, Pre-Registration, Registration, Check-In, Check-Out etc.
